Tips of Growing Rose Plant in Tropical Lowlands

In the tropics, roses for cut flowers are commercially grown in the highlands where the weather is similar b to that of spring in temperate countries. Rose plants, which are sold in the nurseries in the lowlands, are usually grown in pots and sold as potted plants. Usually one would take home a healthy and flowering plant from the nursery and after a period of free flowering session, the plant would i decline in vigour and give smaller and lesser flower. We would attribute it to the hot and humid climate of the tropical lowlands.

The reason however is not the weather but the lack of feed and space when the rose bush remains in the pot that we took it home in. The best way to keep a healthy rose bush is to transplant it in a bed prepared with a good soil, compost and sufficient fertilisers. The rose bush has a taproot and if it remains in the pot there is the possibility that the root does not have sufficient depth for root development If the decision is still to keep it potted than it will be necessary to repot it and while doing so remove thetaproot. This should encourage the root to spread out and gather enough nutrients to remain healthy. I opted to plant my roses in beds and have been enjoying the blooms for a couple of years now.
